The showing will begin with an opening reception Friday, March 9 from 5:30 – 8 p.m.

King’s work includes images which are unenhanced by digital manipulation, as well as photo stencils with silkscreen processes, using hand-drawn and photo positives to create silk screen monoprints and editions.

King’s work is largely autobiographical and contains a self-analytic thread, or mood, which exemplifies her experience with a “painterly” approach to color and texture. She has also worked in stained glass, batik, watercolor, and linoleum block print.

Her work has been shown at the Santa Cruz Art League’s Nationwide Juried Exhibit, Transference of Light, in 2010, and at Cabrillo College.

King is a retired teacher of Language Arts, Spanish, and cooking from the San Lorenzo Valley, where she taught for 30 years before realizing her dream to become a full-time working artist. She has two boys, Josh and Eli Gladden, and is the doting grandmother of five. Sharon and her husband Jim King live in Soquel and like to go for walks with their dog Sammie.

GigaOM analyst Stowe Boyd took an end-of-the-year look at trends in teleworking and reports people working remotely are more efficient than their office-bound colleagues and remote work can equal cost savings for companies.

Boyd references reporting by Ray Fisman at Slate on a study done by Stanford University in partnership with a Chinese travel agency showing that employees allowed to telework answer 15% more calls, took fewer breaks and fewer sick days.

Boyd also cited a 2007 BusinessWeek report indicating that if 40% of employees are working out of the office, up to 60% of office space is “a dead zone of darkened doorways and wasting cubes.” BusinessWeek cited industry analyst estimates that the U.S. is wasting up to $600 billion on direct costs like furniture, energy and cleaning.

While working more efficiently, teleworkers are finding that the home office can be equally distracting or so isolating that people are now looking for options – other than a coffee shop – to get their work done.

“So it’s no real surprise that the coworking movement is growing at a pace that seems closely linked to the number of people jumping into telework or out of the traditional workplace. Deskmag states there are now more than 1,100 coworking spaces worldwide, more than double the number in 2006. Loosecubes, a service set up to help people find coworking spaces, is tracking over 1,400 locations in over 500 cities, globally.”

Boyd concludes that employers and employees benefit include:

Significant savings in expenses and time from the reduced commute.

Increased productivity

Third places like telework centers and coworking spaces will increase to accommodate increased demand.

Coworking may turn out to be the pivot in today’s post-industrial transformation of work: a shining example, perhaps, of how large-scale positive change at the societal level can emerge peacefully from the independent pursuit of personal ends.
