Acterra Honors Satellite Telework Centers as 2011 Environmental Enterprise
Satellite Telework Centers selected to receive Bay Area’s 2011 Business Environmental Award
Felton, Calif., April 19, 2011 – Satellite Telework Centers CEO Barbara Sprenger announced today the company is being recognized for its environmental leadership by the respected environmental advocacy organization Acterra.
Satellite Telework Centers provides workspace on demand for telecommuters, home-based business owners, consultants and start-ups. The company has locations in Felton and Scotts Valley, will open in Truckee in June and has plans to expand throughout California.
Acterra’s Business Environmental Awards is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s oldest and most prestigious environmental recognition programs. Initiated in 1990, it is considered a heavyweight among award programs due to its rigorous application and judging process. “Our awardees must demonstrate their environmental commitment and achievements through a careful vetting process,” states Board President Laura Teksler. “In addition to a thorough written application, the top contenders must demonstrate their programs’ merits firsthand to the judges during a visit to the applicants’ facilities. By the time they are selected to receive our award, they have truly proven that their programs are “setting the bar” in corporate environmental leadership.”
“We were a runner-up for a BEA award in 2009 and took a year to refine our processes, open a second location and get input from members on how we could improve,” said Sprenger. “Our goal has always been give people more flexibility in where and how they work, help businesses comply with environmental regulations and support other small business owners who are our neighbors.”
During the three-month judging process, nominees showcase their innovations in categories including sustainability, environmental enterprise, commute and transportation, and pollution prevention and resource conservation.
“Our business model is built around in-filling in existing downtown business districts so people can walk, bike or drive a few minutes to work rather that commute an hour or more,” Sprenger said. “They can be close to their families without the distractions or sense of isolation that comes from working at home. They tend to spend their money locally, which benefits locally-owned businesses.”
“Satellite sets a unique tone for remote telework/telecommute centers. They combine a work location that is environmentally positive; socially friendly; walking distance to coffee, food, and drink; and with a wide variety of access and membership options,” said Norm Ploss, Chair, Business Environmental Awards Judging Committee.. Equally impressive is the fact that the company opens its facilities to local community groups, who often have difficulty finding places to hold their meetings, which strengthens the ties that are vital to growing a vibrant community.”
Satellite Telework Centers will be honored at the 2011 Business Environmental Awards Reception on Thursday, June 2at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel in Palo Alto. For information regarding the other award-winning programs, please visit www.acterra.org/bea.
